Sailor’s Maki-e fountain pens now available with music nibs! Maki-e is an ancient Japanese art that combines intricate lacquer painting with a variety of surface decorations. These traditionally include powdered gold and other precious metals, gemstones, mother-of-pearl or abalone shell. This 1,200 year-old art form was created to embody the harmony of man with nature. Sailor Maki-e instruments are exclusively designed by commissioned Japanese artisans utilizing the rich Maki-e heritage of Japan’s Kaga region. Sailor offers only true handmade Maki-e techniques including Chinkin, which involves placing small gold pieces into the surface of the lacquer, and Raden, the delicate application of fine shavings of abalone shell into the lacquer surface. The fountain pens featured here offer a full-size Sailor 1911 body with your choice of regular or the popular music nibs in 21K gold. The music nib is like an italic nib with smooth edges allowing you to write expressively with thick and thin strokes. It’s hard to choose which Maki-e design is the most beautiful: the Dragonfly, the Butterfly or the peaceful Winter Deer. Any one will be a cherished treasure and give you a lifetime of writing enjoyment. Fountain pen uses cartridges or converter.
