The Faber-Castell 2008 Pen of the Year focuses on the core feature of Graf von Faber-Castell’s Collection: wood in its noblest and most inspiring variations. The idea behind this year’s pen comes from countess Ottilie’s private salon in the Faber-Castell castle, now over 100 years old, that is panelled in costly East Indies satinwood. Known as the “Lemon Room” for the wood’s fragrant scent, it was masterfully created by the architect Bruno Paul. This was the inspiration for the filigree marquetry work on the barrel of the Pen-of-the-Year 2008: the result is a work of perfection – the world’s smallest parquet on the surface of a pen. No less than 84 satinwood rectangles are individually handmade to create the delicate herringbone pattern. No two segments are alike: each must be fitted in an exact position to produce precisely even joints. The interplay that develops between the warm, shimmering satinwood and the cool platinum-plated cap and grip is fascinating. The masterpiece is crowned by a chessboard-faceted citrine gemstone set in the end cap. The individually-numbered fountain pens have Faber’s 18K bicolor gold nib and a plunger filling mechanism for bottle ink.
