Product Description

American Heritage Civil War Witness Tree Fountain Pen
Commemorating the 150-year history of the U.S. Civil War, these handcrafted pens are made from a Honey Locust tree that was a silent witness at the Battle of Gettysburg. The young tree stood near the site of Pickett's Charge and the 1863 Gettysburg Address. Damaged by a storm in 2008, a portion of the famous tree was removed and used to create the pens. The surviving portion of the tree still stands at Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg. Embedded in the cap of the pen is a piece of an authentic Confederate mini ball found in Appomattox, Virginia. Appomattox Courthouse was the site of Lee's surrender to Grant's forces and marked the end of the Confederacy. Finely crafted in the USA, the Civil War pens have one-of-a-kind wood barrels and caps turned and polished by hand, and equipped with black resin and polished chrome fittings. The fountain pen with steel nib and twist ball pen are engraved with 'Civil War, 1861-1865'. Pay tribute to the 150-year history of the Civil War with the Witness Tree pens. Cartridge/converter fill.

Holding history in my hand.
Overall

I love this Commemorative Civil War fountain pen! Having visited Gettysburg Battle Field, every time I pick up the pen my imagination flows with the ink emotions and sounds of the drama of that historic battle. It is almost like walking on hallowed ground.

I'm very pleased with the design. It has a rounded tummy (body) and is shorter than any pen I've used. The cap does not remain secure for writing, so I leave it off, but I do that with almost all my pens.

I am only slightly disappointed with the very subtle lack of smoothness of the nib, which occasionally has a very tiny drag; or scratchy feel. But this seems to feel like it only lasts through a portion of forming certain letters, and then disappears.

I only have about 6 fountain pens, collected over many years, but like with my briar pipes, I'm tempted to collect more. But I believe it is worth the $110.00 price I paid.

What is your opinion of the quality of this item?

Overall, I'm very satisfied with this pen, and it appears to have been made by qualified, talented craftsmen.
