The designs are screened on brass or steel and layered with transparent lacquer. The black-with-primary-colors motif is an interpretation of Wright's designs for the Avery Coonley house constructed in 1907-08. The estate consisted of several buildings including a playhouse for the Coonley's young daughter. The black and grey square patterns evoke the Ennis House, one of the first to use modular concrete block, which Wright cast with Mayan effects.
