After a painstaking restoration, the Agate Pavilion, part of the world-famous Catherine Palace in St. Petersburg, was finally revealed in all of its splendor and multi-faceted beauty in September 2013. Its architecture and materials were the inspiration for the new limited edition Rollerball Pen of the Year 2014 from Graf von Faber-Castell. The magnificent building in the style of a Roman bathhouse was built by Scottish architect Charles Cameron by order of Empress Catherine the Great and completed in 1785. The Agate Rooms are lavishly decorated with precious dark red jasper which can only be found in Russia. Boris Igdalov, the master craftsman who led the restoration, was personally involved in the creation of 2014’s Pen of the Year in two exclusive versions in dark red, lustrous jasper with gold or platinum accents.
