What is your opinion of the quality of this item?
When I was first given one, I was not impressed. OK... hexagonal shape reminiscent of the first mechanical pencils from pentel. Classic look.
The person that gave it to me simply said, "start using it. I guarantee that it will soon become your favorite pen." He was absolutely correct.
I had never heard of Caran D'Ache. It is all in their goliath refill. It is the best writing ball point on the market. Period. I now own several of these 849 Metal Clicks and four more elegant ones.

Excellent, elegant design.
AS easy to use as it gets
Yes
What is your opinion of the quality of this item?
This is a great pen. I have a number of good pens by Lamy, Kaweco, Cross, etc. All are fine instruments I enjoy using, but I keep coming back to my 849.

Caran d'Ache. Swiss made and it shows: Very high quality.
Very simple, basic, design executed flawlessly. Large refill loads through the push-button activator. Proper tension on the pocket clip. A little light overall, but it's a slim pen perfect for daily carry in a shirt pocket- and the heft is right for its size. I bought this one to replace one I misplaced- and I would again.
Ease of use: as easy as it gets. Press the button. Write.
It is on the expensive side but I am cheap.
What is your opinion of the quality of this item?
Four, pushing hard on five stars. Again, I am cheap.

Great pen, good price, but...

The quality is mostly great. I have a four of these pens with different color barrels and have used them over the past couple years. They are great for everyday use and abuse. I've had only one not stellar experience with them and it was really customer service with whom I have the issue. One of the pens was defective on arrival. I hadn't checked it immediately after it arrived & it had been a months before I realized it. The mechanism didn't work properly. On this pen all the working parts (excluding the spring) are housed in the button. If I use a button from a different pen it works perfectly. I contacted Fahrney's and the manufacture. Fahrney's either didn't reply or I missed it. The manufacture told me to ship the pen to them and they'd fix, or replace it. It's a $20 pen and only the button is defective. It hardly seems worth shipping it to Switzerland.
The pen is well designed, a good size, and feels good in the hand.
It can hardly get any easier then pressing a button and starting to write. I've always had these pens write and write well (once the tip is out). It writes smoothly and feels good while writing.
Absolutely. You'd be hard pressed to find an as durable pen at this, or even somewhat higher cost.
What is your opinion of the quality of this item?
This pen is superb. It's just a pain to get it replaced if it is in any way defective as shipping an entire $23 pen to Switzerland and then having them ship it back is a little ridiculous when a few gram part is not working properly. I may end up doing that even though it seems not cost effective.

Best pen for ANY money!

I worked for three years in Afghanistan as an inspector for small arms. Every time a weapon came in (and sometimes they came in 20 to 40 at a time!) I would have to fill in a 5 part form with unit name, type weapon, serial number, and such, along with a description of why the weapon was coming in. I wrote, A LOT! I did it with a Caran D'Ache 849. Simple, well balanced, comfortable, with the best darn refill on the planet!
I own several "good" pens, such as my Pelican 800, and a Porsche Design. While not quite as "elegant," the 849 is a robust design, will not roll off the bench or desk, and since mine was yellow, did not get lost in a bench full of punches, tools, and parts. The Goliath refill is long lasting, and always smooth, putting down a consistent line of ink, right up to the end. The aluminum body also held up well against the oils and solvents of the shop.
Simple, easy to hold, basic. What more do you need in an every-day work pen?
If you want true value for your buck, stop here! If you are looking for that pen to impress your clients and work mates, this ain't it. If you are a teacher, secretary, or someone who writes a lot, then this is the best use of your money. Forget the disposable stuff!
What is your opinion of the quality of this item?
Best pen on the market for someone who needs a pen to write with, and not one to impress with.
