Montegrappa marks the century since the end of the Great War with a new limited edition, Mia Carissima. For Montegrappa, the occasion is particularly moving, for it knows that soldiers sent handwritten missives from the front to their loved ones back home, many using Montegrappa pens. And their billets-doux would open with “My darling…” In Italian, the greeting changes to “Mia Carissima”, the name chosen for the commemorative pen created to remind us of the sacrifices our forebears endured during the First World War. The Mia Carissima is hand-turned from shiny Malachite Green resin with black accents and elegant sterling silver trim. It is a reinterpretation of an historic Montegrappa Elmo pen that was available in the early 1900s and originally produced entirely in ebonite. The new pen possesses a voluptuous form that fits perfectly in the hand. The vintage-style clip is strongly influenced by past fashion. Slightly fan-shaped, it features a design with linear etching that recalls the earliest awakenings of what would become Art Deco. Mia Carissima’s nib is made in 18K gold, adorned with filigree decoration. The writing instrument also possesses a secret - a technical innovation that still excites pen connoisseurs thanks to its complexity that keeps its usage from becoming widespread, even in 2019. The defining characteristic of this fountain pen and true to its vintage inspiration is its ‘safety nib system.’ A special rotating mechanism inside the barrel lets you expose the nib when writing, then retract it back into the barrel when not in use. The original pen that inspired Mia Carissima had to be filled with an eye-dropper. To accommodate the modern user, Montegrappa’s engineers developed a new filling system that utilizes easy-to-replace ink cartridges. The Mia Carissima fountain pen is limited to only 100 pieces worldwide - Fahrney’s is one of the few places you’ll find it!
