Retro 51 Limited Smithsonian Bijutsukai Rollerball/Ballpoint Pen
The newest addition to the Officially Licensed Smithsonian Collection is Bijutsukai. This Tornado™ Rollerball pen’s
art comes from the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives featuring art from Shin-Bijutsukai magazine published from
1901 to 1906. Originating from the early Japanese pattern books of the 1660s, the magazine’s colorful and abstract
designs reflected historical and technological shifts in Japanese society, influenced by Art Nouveau and Japonisme - the
Western European fondness for a mediated, Japanese aesthetic. Through its visually striking designs, Shin-Bijutsukai
showcased a blend of timeless themes and innovative influences, positioning itself as a pioneering force in Japanese art
and design during the early 20th century.
The abstract art from this magazine has been reproduced onto the textured lacquer barrel in refreshing pastel tones
complete with stonewashed pewter accents. Each pen has been numbered on the top ring and finished with the
Smithsonian sun logo. Finally, they are loaded into a commemorative tube that makes for a beautiful presentation.
Showcase this work of art in hand when you’re writing with the Smithsonian Bijutsukai.
