What is your opinion of the quality of this item?
The workmanship is excellent. The threaded cap is smooth to open and close as is removing the nib section. I would liken this pen to the Pelikan 200 series in weight and size but with a slightly smoother nib. The classic lines of this pen make it a comfortable writer. The 1911 is certainly worth the price. I learned to write using a fountain pen and have used one all my life so while not an expert I feel confident in recommending the 1911 as a great go to everyday pen. A side note, Fahrney's customer service is outstanding. E-mails are answered promptly and any adjustments handled in a professional manner.

I use this pen more often than my Montblanc. Writes smooth and has good ink flow.
