Kuna--
The people of Kuna live on reservations in Panama and in a few small villages in Colombia. The people of Kuna are known for their bright molas, a colorful textile art form made up of several layers of embroidered cotton. (Mola translates as “clothing” from Kuna Language.) Molas segments are used to make or decorate blouses of Kuna women’s national dresses, which are worn daily. In Kuna language, the word for mola blouse is Tulemola which translates as “Kuna people’s clothing”. The textile designs are colorful and portray eclectic patterns of nature, animals, and cultural symbols which make up a very unique look and color pallet. Some other colorful items that are also recognized as an important part of the traditional attire is a red cotton scare frown on the head of women, colorful ornaments worn on faces  and around the neck, stings of red, black, and yellow beads worn on the legs and arms, and the Olo – a gold ring worn through the nose.  The Monteverde USA Kuna pen design was inspired by the extraordinary colors and patterns that derived from traditional textiles, attires, and designs that are used in Kuna’s culture. Huli--
The people of Huli clan live in the Hela Province and Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea, the world’s third largest island country that is inhabited with some of the planet’s most extraordinary biodiversity. Huli people believe that they are descendants of a male ancestor called “Huli”, who was first to cultivate Huli’s ancestral lands. The people of Huli believe in many different spirits that they call – the damia; these spirits inhabit the sky, rivers, forest and mountains and have full control over the land, climate, fertility of the soil and livestock. The traditional attire of the Huli people is considered to be the most colorful in the country. Men of Huli tribes are known for spending lots of time on decorating their bodies, faces, and hair. The prominent yellow-red face coloring is one of the most famous identifiers of the Huli men; the Ochre (red clay) and Ambua (yellow clay) are sacred, traditional coloring materials that are used for the face painting. The upper part of the face painted yellow color, meanwhile the lower part is painted red. The combination of these two colors creates an incredible, unique contrast that appears stunningly beautiful and empowering on men of the Huli people. Aside from the body painting, the real attention grabber features of Huli traditional costumes are their wigs. The main reason for the tribe’s obsession with wigs is the in initiation rites that occur when boys reach the ages of 14 or 15. During that time period boys are taught to take care of their hair with special procedures that make hair grow strong, thick, and long and eventually shaped into a mushroom shape that will be later shaved off several times and used to create the traditional wigs. The wigs are accented with varied elements such as animal fur, plants, and feathers, which in turn, creates an extraordinary, powerful, and magnificent look. The unique appearance, colors, and traditions of the Huli people inspired the design of the Monteverde USA® Huli pen collection. The primary inspiration was the body paint used by the people which can be noted in the colors of the exclusive custom hand-made and mixed high-quality resin; the dominant beaming yellow and red patterns that are also combined with dark blue color that takes its inspiration from the wig elements such as bright blue feathers, often used in wig designs by the men of the Huli people. Dogon--
People of Dogon are one of the most remarkable people in all of Africa due to their unique traditions, lifestyle, and culture. The Dogon people live perched on a sandstone cliff 1,000 feet high on Bandiagara Plateau, in a region located between Mali and Upper Volta south of the Niger River. The Dogon people build their villages and individual houses based on their cosmology and dual symbolism of the male-female fertility. In the Dogon cosmology, the creator of the universe was the God called Amma that represents fundamental dualist elements of nature such as women and men, life or death, etc. Dogon people are also known for their knowledge about Sirius system which dates back to 3200 BC, long before it was discovered by scientists in 1862. The Dogon are famous for their incredible artistic abilities that predominantly focus on mask carving called ‘inima’ and wooden figurative art. There are three main cults that incorporate mask making: Awa – the cult of the dead that focuses on funeral and death anniversary ceremonies; Lebe – celebrating the Earth God that affects the fertility of the soil and agriculture in general; Binu – the supernatural protective being that often reveals itself in a form of an animal. During the ceremonies masked dancers known as “damas” perform traditional dances, however only a few ceremonial dances can be seen by the outsiders. The traditional attire of dancers is very colorful, however the costumes, ritual elements, and masks design often vary from one village to another. The most commonly known look includes waist, wrist, and ankle bands made of plaited fiber strips, dyed fuchsia pink and golden yellow colors; black or brown  vests  woven of fiber and embroider with white cowry shells. The mask’s colors and overall design often varies on the type of the ceremony but most commonly known design is black or brown masks carved into unique face-like shapes that are often decorated with colorful fiber strips and have painted ornaments with traditional colors. The unique attire, colors, and traditions of the Dogon people inspired the design of Monteverde USA Dogon pen collection.
